A defender is a metal plate covering the part of the cylinder visible from outside, around the keyhole. Its job is to protect the cylinder from anyone trying to break it or pull it out with a tool.
What it's for
- it covers the cylinder and makes it harder to grip with a tool;
- it works alongside a security cylinder: together they protect better than either one alone;
- on doors exposed to passers-by (landing, entrance hall, shop front) it is an extra layer of defence, and it is visible.
When it's worth it
If the cylinder sticks out from the door, if there is no external protection on your door, or if you have recently changed the cylinder and want to finish the job.
