Before you close the door and go, spend ten minutes on this list. Many of the tips come from the Italian State Police.
Checklist
- Does the door really lock? Lock it with the key, not just on the latch. If the lock is old or the cylinder sticks out, have it looked at before you leave.
- No spare key hidden outside. Under the doormat or in a plant pot, it will be found straight away.
- Post. Ask a trusted neighbour to collect it.
- Social media. Don't post while you're away: tell the story when you're back.
- Valuables. Don't leave them lying around: photograph valuable items and, for what stays in the home, consider a safe.
- If you find the door open or locked from the inside when you return: don't go in, call 113.
One figure, without alarm. According to ISTAT, when a burglar gets into a home, in 28.6% of cases they force the door. Home burglaries have nonetheless decreased compared with 2015-2016.
Holiday homes and B&Bs. Guests change, and so do the problems: keys handed over, copies to check. With a smart lock, access can be managed remotely.
